What Social Media could be used for
As I’m listening to the newest episode of my favorite true crime podcast, I am STOPPING everything I’m doing and I start drawing this comic.
Alicia Navarro went missing in 2019 at the age of 14. She was last seen in Glendale, Arizona. Alicia has high functioning autism and went missing after she was lured by a child predator online. She loved playing Minecraft and we all know that online communities can be extremely loving but we’re also 24/7 accessible to people who don’t have good intentions. She left a note saying that she left the house but would return. She hasn’t been seen since.
And then the pandemic hit. People all started to look the same with their masks on and the media was all over the pandemic.
When scrolling through social media, I realize that these platforms have grown into promoted post-agram and promoted post-book. If you watched The Social Dilemma on @netflix , you’ll know that social media started as a way to bring people closer together. There is nothing that would bring people closer together more than accepting non profits to run their missing person posters on their platform to reunite them with their loved ones.
It came to this point where we are shown advertisements for handbags and clothes because it looks like “something we would want” and companies can make money off of it. Though, for every advertisement they run, they can easily show a missing person’s posters in that same carousel post.
There are non-profit organisations like the Anti-predator project, that I have never heard of until this week. They’re such a great cause! There are many more non-profits like this as well who make it their mission to bring kids back home.
On average we spend 2 hours and 24 minutes per day on social media in 2021! Just imagine the impact it would make..
I’m just saying..
